The Minister of Local Government, Francis Kaboneka, rallied taxpayers from the Northern Province and he urged citizens to always clear their tax obligations in time to facilitate the government’s budget planning and development projects.

Minister Kaboneka was speaking today to the Northern Province business community during Rwanda Revenue Authority’s ongoing Taxpayers Appreciation Day.

He commended participants for their role in national development and he called on them to comply with their tax obligations to avoid penalties, but also for their pride.

“I am happy that, people are changing their understanding of tax payment. It is all thanks to the spirit we share in contributing to the country’s development. We should be having pride that local governments’ tax performance is progressing day by day with hope for better performance this fiscal year”, he said.

The Tax Appreciation Day is being celebrated under the theme “My tax, my development, my dignity.”

Minister Kaboneka said that; “all achievement is about unity, working together and shared vision”.

He insisted on the need for compliance with tax obligation.

“In order to avoid that tax becoming a burden, everyone should fulfill his/her duty and, together, we become taxpayers. Thus, tax payment becomes a culture”, he insisted.

Pascal Bizimana Ruganintwali, RRA Deputy Commissioner General encouraged the Northern Province business community to embrace the use of Electronic Billing Machines (EBM) to facilitate efficient evaluation of tax payment process.

He, however, noted the low level of compliance with the new billing system.

During the fiscal year 2016/17, taxes worth Rwf16.5 billion were collected from the Northern Province, which Governor Jean Marie Vianney Gatabazi looks at to increase this fiscal year.

“I believe there is potential to perform better than we did last year without hindering income of the business community as long as they use EBMs in their businesses in big numbers,” he said.

Minister Kaboneka hailed Musanze Business Community members who came together and completed a modern market complex, and he urged other districts to follow the model, because in unity is strength.

He also reiterated the Government commitment to the rule of law.

“Much as tax evaders shall be investigated and prosecuted, good taxpayers shall always be appreciated”, he said.

A total of 14 best taxpayers from the Province were appreciated during the function.
