The World Bank pledges support to national social protection strategy

The Minister of Local Government, Hon James MUSONI, received a World Bank delegation led by Ms Lynne SHERBURNE BENZ, Sector Manager for Social Protection for Africa Region in the World Bank.

The meeting, that took place on June 07, 2011 at the Ministry’s head office in Kacyiru, aimed at discussing broad lines for the World Bank Social Protection Support.

The Ministry of Local Government has the mandate to coordinate the implementation of all social protection related programs.

The Minister highlighted a number of achievements during the last 17 years of rebuilding the nation after the genocide against Tutsi that destroyed a number of resources, especially physical, infrastructure and human lives.

The Minister said that, the national social protection strategy is in place along with a fully-fledged department in charge of social protection in Rwanda Local Development Support Fund.

He reiterated the Government’s commitment to pro poor development strategies, and it is in this context that, the National Council of People with Disabilities was established.

Minister MUSONI assured the delegation that, currently, Government has established a more coordinated social protection approach, and he requested the World Bank to assist in consolidating the current realizations.

The World Bank delegation commended the government’s efforts towards social protection, especially supporting the vulnerable people through community development based options.

Delegates commended the achievements by Vision 2020 Umurenge Program as one of the pro-poor programs aiming at poverty reduction that the Government of Rwanda is spearheading.

The National Social Protection Strategy was for both its vision and consistency. The World Bank pledged their continued support for the successful implementation of this strategy.

“Rwandans are happy with what is being done. As Government, we will always do our best for the impact to be visible in terms of socio-economic transformation”, Minister James MUSONI said.
