The general theme for this assembly which was officially opened today June 1, 2019 in Kigali is: "Building the togetherness of tomorrow in the Great Lakes region around mayors with women, youth and schools"; with participants are mainly from Rwanda as host country, Burundi and Democratic Republic of Congo.
In his opening remarks, the Minister of Local Government in Rwanda Prof. Shyaka said for Rwanda, francophone space is a space of human values that are expressed as values of peace, friendship and diversity; openness and progress.
He said: We once knew the absence of togetherness; the history of Rwanda and the Great Lakes region demonstrates this. But today we know the fruits of its existence that we are today determined to preserve. And we think that in the preservation of togetherness we are not alone, that on this path we will act together to make it happen.”
“We are the evidence of strength and the will to live together because we have been a reference in the past. The mayors with women, youth and schools must serve as a bridge to build lasting sustainable peace in our region and we must make our respective contributions to make this peace truly sustainable development and a driving force for the transformation and development of our populations.
