On 06 October 2019, The Permanent Secretary at MINALOC Mme Ingabire Assumpta joined the residents of Rusizi Distict for the celebrate of the International Day of Old Persons.
The event took place at Gitambi Sector, under the theme: “Access to decent work as way to better ageing".
The function was marked by various activities including offering 6 cows, 86 goats and 26 mattresses to the vulnerable old persons.
Addressing the residents, the Permanent Secretary Mme Ingabire Assumpta said that by celebrating elderly, the country is honouring their life, their legacy, what they did for their communities, and especially for giving birth and raising their kids for the country.
"Currently, our social Protection Programme does not reach to every vulnerable old persons across the country due to financial limitations, however, our government manages to help the most vulnerable elderly, and we pledge to continue doing so, because we want them to have a dignified ageing." She Said
Mme Ingabire also encouraged children and Rwandans in general to take care of elderly in their respective communities.
Rusizi District with more than 20 thousand elderly, was chosen to host this event, because it is ranked among the districts with high numbers of old persons in Rwanda.
Rwanda now counts more than 500 thousand citizens aged above 65 years old.
