The Umurenge Kagame Cup is an annual multi-sport tournament in Rwanda that promotes good governance and community engagement through sports. Established in 2006 under the name "Imiyoborere Myiza ‘Good Governance’ Competition," it was renamed in 2010 to honor President Paul Kagame's commitment to people-centered leadership and sports development. 

The tournament involves all 416 Administrative Sectors (Imirenge) across Rwanda. Teams representing each sector compete in district, provincial, and national stages. The national finals bring together the best teams from various disciplines. 

Disciplines 

The competition has evolved to include a wide range of sports, ensuring inclusivity and broad participation: Football (men’s and women’s), Basketball, Volleyball, Cycling, Athletics, Igisoro (traditional board game), Traditional games like urukiramende (high jump) and kubuguza (igisoro). 

Recent Highlights 

In the 2024 edition hosted in the Rubavu and Musanze Districts, the men’s championship was secured by Rubengera Sector, who triumphed over Kimonyi Sector with a 2-0 scoreline. On the women’s side, Murunda Sector clinched the title after a 2-0 win against Mahembe Sector. A standout highlight was 67-year-old Rosette Mukamutana being honored with the Best Combative Player award for her impressive performance with Rulindo’s basketball team 

2025 EDITION 

The 2025 edition started in January, with sectors from all over the country beginning their local competition. The tournament keeps getting bigger and more important, with plans to involve more people and provide more support in the future. The Umurenge Kagame Cup is still an important way to promote good governance, help young people grow their talents and bring the communities together through sports.
