Rwanda’s Private sector pledges more efforts to poverty reduction
The efforts will be described by the more involvement of private sector members in not only providing employment to the citizens but also helping and monitoring their employees in graduating from poverty.
The pledge was made on Friday by the representatives of Rwanda’s Private Sector Federation during the consultative dialogue on the implementation of the national strategy for sustainable graduation out of poverty, which brought together officials from the Ministry of Local Government, LODA and members of private sector.
The Ministry of Local Government recognises the role of the private sector in contributing to poverty reduction through jobs creation and employment, corporate social responsibility, financial and in-kind support to poor and vulnerable households, support to small businesses and trade and different roles the private sector plays in community mobilisation.
The cabinet meeting held on 11th November 2022, approved the national strategy for sustainable graduation out of poverty, with a view of fast tracking the achievement of NST1 targets. The strategy elaborates the role of private sector in graduation from poverty.
As articulated in the NST1, Rwanda aims to build strong progress made in reducing poverty with the aim of achieving a rate of below 1% for extreme poverty by 2024 and eliminating poverty by 2030. However, it has been noticed that Government support and interventions alone are insufficient in fast tracking poverty reduction to achieve the set targets.
