#Kwibuka32: Minister Habimana joins Kayonza residents to honor victims at Mukarange
On 12 April 2026, a commemoration event marking the 32nd anniversary of the Genocide against the Tutsi was held at the Mukarange Genocide Memorial in Kayonza District, bringing together national and local leaders, as well as citizens.
The event was attended by the Minister of Local Government, Dominique Habimana, the State Minister Marie Solange Kayisire, among other officials.
Participants paid tribute to more than 5,000 victims who were killed at Mukarange Parish on April 12, 1994.
In his remarks, Minister Habimana conveyed his condolences to survivors of the Genocide against the Tutsi and commended their resilience. He emphasized the importance of unity, forgiveness, and perseverance, noting that survivors have played a critical role in strengthening Rwanda’s social cohesion and national resilience.
He also stressed the need to preserve the memory of the Genocide, underscoring that despite its painful nature, it remains an integral part of Rwanda’s history that must never be forgotten.
The Minister further urged citizens, particularly the youth, to proactively counter genocide denial and repudiate genocide ideology in all its manifestations, especially within digital spaces and social media platforms.
Kayitare Mpinganzima Pauline, a survivor of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi, provided a solemn testimony regarding the atrocities at Mukarange Parish. She recounted how Tutsis who had sought sanctuary at the parish were targeted by Interahamwe militia on the morning of April 12, 1994. Pauline detailed the victims' courageous but overwhelmed resistance against the attackers. Having lost several family members in the massacre, she eventually survived by seeking refuge in Tanzania.
She expressed her profound gratitude to the Rwandan Patriotic Army (RPA) for their intervention in halting the Genocide and liberating the nation. Furthermore, she commended the Government of Rwanda for its unwavering commitment to supporting survivors, particularly through initiatives that provide access to education and the socio-economic opportunities necessary to rebuild their lives.
As part of the commemoration, the remains of 27 victims of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi were interred in a dignified burial ceremony.
