Rwanda Celebrates 11th African Day of School Feeding, Honors Top Performing Districts
On Friday, March 6, 2026, Rwanda joined the rest of the continent in celebrating the 11th African Day of School Feeding. The national event was held at GS St. Paul Muko in Bugarama, Rusizi District, bringing together government officials, educators, parents, and partners to reflect on the program's transformative impact on the nation's youth.
Recognizing Excellence in Parental Engagement
A centerpiece of the celebrations was the recognition of Districts that have demonstrated exceptional leadership in mobilizing parental contributions—a critical pillar for the sustainability and success of the School Feeding Programme.
Based on the latest performance assessments, the following Districts were awarded for their record-breaking participation rates:
Ruhango District: 95.4%
Burera District: 90.1%
Rulindo District: 86.4%
These figures reflect a growing culture of collective responsibility, where families and communities actively invest in the nutritional needs of their children to ensure a conducive learning environment.
A Cornerstone for Student Success and National Development
The School Feeding Programme has evolved into more than just a nutrition initiative; it is now a fundamental driver of educational excellence and social equity. During the event, speakers highlighted how the program continues to serve as a cornerstone for student success by:
Enhancing Academic Performance: Improving concentration and cognitive abilities.
Reducing Dropout Rates: Providing a strong incentive for students to remain in school.
Fostering Social Cohesion: Strengthening interactions and unity among learners.
Promoting Health: Enhancing the physical growth and overall well-being of the younger generation.
Supporting Local Economies
Beyond the classroom, the program provides a vital economic stimulus. By sourcing food from local communities, it creates a sustainable market for local farmers and cooperatives, directly contributing to the economic empowerment of rural households and the growth of the agricultural sector.
The Ministry of Local Government continues to urge all stakeholders to maintain this momentum, ensuring that every child in Rwanda has the nutritional support necessary to reach their full potential.
