African Bishops Conclude SECAM 20th Plenary in Rwanda, with strong message of unity and hope

The 20th Plenary Assembly of the Symposium of Episcopal Conferences of Africa and Madagascar (SECAM) concluded on Sunday in Kibeho, Rwanda, with a vibrant Youth Convention and a solemn Holy Mass that marked the closing of the week-long gathering. The ceremony was attended by Rwanda’s Minister of State in the Ministry of Local Government, Dominique Habimana, along with other senior officials and church leaders.

In his remarks, Minister Habimana commended the Assembly for cantering its discussions on hope, reconciliation and peace. He noted that this message deeply resonates with Africa’s current realities and the continent’s aspiration for transformation.

“The theme speaks directly to the complex challenges Africa is facing today—challenges that require deliberate collaboration between governments, communities, and key stakeholders such as the Catholic Church,” he said.

Minister Habimana also reaffirmed the Government of Rwanda’s commitment to developing Kibeho into a hub for both spiritual pilgrimage and sustainable local development.

“Kibeho welcomes pilgrims from across the world—many of whom come seeking spiritual renewal, healing, and unity. It is a sacred place where differences are transcended, and the spirit of solidarity is revived. As more people are drawn to Kibeho, it is also becoming a catalyst for local development,” he added.  he Government of Rwanda stands ready to work hand-in-hand with the Catholic Church and its partners to ensure Kibeho reaches its full potential.”

He concluded by calling on the youth to uphold the values of unity, peace, and development, stressing their critical role in shaping Africa’s future.

SECAM took place in Kigali, Rwanda from July 30 to August 4, 2025, drawing over 250 participants—cardinals, bishops, priests, religious women and men, and lay leaders from across Africa and its islands.
